Clean and Clear with Indie Lee
“You have 6 Months to live…”
This is what countless medical professionals told Indie Lee after she was diagnosed with a life threatening brain tumor in 2008. Doctors felt that the tumor could be environmentally derived and attributed to something as simple as what she was putting on her skin.
Indie Lee is a one of the strongest woman I know. She has overcome mental and physical exhaustion to become the true definition of strength. She fearlessly fought through a life threatening illness to then build an empire specifically designed to inspire women and men through beauty and wellness. The Indie Lee brand is so much more than routine self care, Indie Lee is a brand that represents life, health, mind… and skin.
What has been your mission and inspiration to start your own skincare line?
In 2008, after losing vision in my left eye, I was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor and given as little as six months to live. It stopped me in my tracks – I had been living a healthy life and at the time I was growing edible flowers, herbs, and starter vegetable plants in the greenhouse in my backyard and selling them at my local Whole Foods. I was eating healthily and exercising, plus there was no history of this in my family. When I asked how this was possible, my doctor asked me a life-changing question – “What do you put on your skin?” That was my awakening. The truth was I had no idea what I was putting on my skin. I started researching and the more I learned, the more I knew that I had to make a change in the industry. After successfully surviving surgery, I started creating clean products dedicated to educating and empowering others to live the healthiest version of their life. I haven’t stopped since.
What does “Beauty” mean to you?
I believe that beauty begins from within. I always try to remind myself that we are all perfectly imperfect. You should never try to change yourself because of outward standards.
Selfcare is so important. During a time of uncertainty, stress, and/or feeling overwhelmed what are some things you do to relax?
Meditation is one of my biggest rituals. I do transcendental meditation twice daily for twenty minutes. It’s something that always brings me back to center and keeps me grounded. I really feel the effects if I don’t stick with it.
I also religiously practice my Selfcare Sundays. I always take Sundays for myself – I mask, take a relaxing bath, and always clean my makeup brushes. They seem like small acts, but they help ground me for my week ahead.
This is a hard question because all Indie Lee products are amazing but….Do you have a favorite?
It is such a hard question for me! It’s like picking a favorite child. However, right now, my favorite product is our I-Recover Mind & Body Gel. It’s one of two products that signify our entry into wellness, as well as my personal recovery story from brain surgery – mind, body, and soul. This gel is a wellness game changer. It’s packed with Arnica, Black Pepper, Lavender, Patchouli, Eucalyptus, and Menthol. It provides an amazing warm-cool sensation, making it great for everything from sore and achy muscles to aromatherapeutic uses. For me personally, it’s also provided a ton of comfort when I experience a Rheumatoid Arthritis flare-up. I was actually diagnosed with R.A. six months before the brain tumor (which I don’t think is a coincidence), so it’s something I’ve dealt with for a long time and am loving the comfort provided by this product. Plus, it has a great scent for a small sense of calm during these crazier days.
Do you have a morning and evening skincare routine? If so, can you share…
My morning ritual right now includes cleansing with our Purifying Face Wash, toning with our CoQ-10 Toner, and following with our Stem Cell Serum and Daily Vitamin Infusion. Then I moisturize with our Superfruit Facial Cream and finish with our I-Waken Eye Serum. I also love using my Jade Roller and Gua Sha tools with my serums and moisturizers. It allows me to be mindful and present while I apply my skincare. I also just added a new product to my routine that I am loving – our new launch, I-Waken Resurfacing Mask. It helps wake up tired and dull-looking skin, which has been great during this time. It only takes five minutes to refresh skin for a gorgeous glow.
In the evening, Everything stays the same, except instead of CoQ-10 Toner, I exfoliate with our Radiance Renewal Peel.
How important is having a skincare routine for athletes that are exposed to the sun and outdoors on a regular basis?
Taking care of your skin is important for everyone and definitely for people spending a lot of time outdoors! If there are three products you shouldn’t skip, it’s a cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF – they’ll help keep your skin healthy, hydrated, happy, and protected. It’s also important to remove dirt and impurities that may have built up on your skin outside. Also, don’t neglect your eyes – I only wish my mother had told me to use an eye serum when I was younger! Eyes are typically the first area to show visible signs of aging, and if you’re squinting in the sun, it’ll show!
What drives you to be a better woman and leader each and every day?
I’m always inspired by my kids, the letters and DMs I receive from customers, my team, and the other founders in this clean beauty space. I feel very lucky to be surrounded by such a supportive community.
What are some of your guilty pleasures?
A good single malt scotch and a Vampire Diaries binge with my daughter.
Favorite place to relax?
Any place in nature, especially by the ocean. Being by the water really grounds me.
Favorite place to work?
It’s never about a single place, it’s about creating an environment and mindset that is supportive, and that starts with me. So whether I’m at my home office, working from my front porch (which I do frequently as a result of COVID), our corporate office, or a hotel room when I was traveling, I’m able to create the perfect space to be productive
